Your data at risk – part one

Posted on December 6th, 2006

In a computer the data is stored in the hard drive. It doesn’t matter if you use an old computer or a new one, PC or Apple, they all use hard drives.

A customer asked me if one could destroy the data in a computer by scratching the motherboard, well the answer is absolutely not, a few scratches in the motherboard might prevent someone from turning the computer on an using it normally, but if they transfer that hard drive unit into a working system, the user will be able to recover every single bit of data stored in that hard drive.

If you purchased a new computer and plan to get rid of the old one, make sure your data gets deleted or destroyed before it even leaves your house.

Common questions

Where is my data stored?
Computers store all the data in hard drives, these are sealed disks mounted on top of each other spinning at high speeds, some reach up to 15,000 rpm.

What does a hard drive look like?
The size is always the same, they might change in color and design, here is a photo of a regular hard drive.

How do I delete the data?
You can format the hard drive by using your Windows CD. Also there are programs that wipe out your data completely before you give your computer away. Simply deleting files is not going to protect you from someone with a little knowledge from recovering your information and using it.

How can I destroy the hard drive?
The answer is simple. Just open the computer with a screwdriver, remove the hard drive carefully, (some computers have sharp edges inside and you could hurt yourself) and smash it with a hammer to pieces.

Is there anything else I need to remove to keep my data safe?
No. The hard drive is the only component that stores data in a computer. Some computers may have more than one hard drive.

Can I donate a computer without the hard drive?
Yes. The recipient would have to get a new hard drive and install it in the computer.

Can I use my old hard drive on my new computer
Yes. The connection for standard IDE hard drives has not changed.

How do I know if its IDE or SATA?
The IDE has 40 pins and the SATA is shaped like an L and its smaller than IDE.

Before you open your computer case.
Be advised that there is always the risk of electric shock that can be harmful to you or the internal components, that is why here is our list of recommendations before proceeding:

  • Always unplug the power cable before opening the computer case.
Discharge yourself from any static electricity by touching the metal frame first.
  • NEVER, under any circumstances open the monitor.
  • If something doesn’t come off easy don’t force it, computer cases are designed to be disassembled without much effort, be patient and find the right parts to remove.
  • Try not to have any liquids (soda, coffee or water, etc…) near the computer when you open the case.
  • When in doubt, call the professionals (that is us)
  • Proceed at your own risk

Additional information
rpm = revolution per minute = It represents the number of full rotations something makes in one minute.
Please consult a professional before opening your computer case.
