Windows XP Update: SP1 and SP2
Jan 02
If you are planning on keeping Windows XP and have not yet updated your system, now is the time. Some people don’t even know that they need to update their operating system, there is something called a ‘Service Pack’ which includes updates for your computer. Aside from regular hot fixes the service packs are absolutely necessary and I recommend you install them as soon as possible.
Do you need to update?
To check whether your system needs to be updated follow these instructions:

- Click on ’start’ (lower left corner of your screen)
- Right-click ‘My Computer’ to get a menu
- Choose properties.
- Check your Windows version, if you don’t see ‘Service Pack’ anywhere, you need to install both.

Service Pack 1
This is the first SP for Windows, if you want to install SP2 you have to install this one first.
Reasons to install Service Pack 1:
- Includes Internet Explorer 6
- Improves network connectivity
- Fixes common bugs (errors)
- Increases hard drive performance
- Does not require authentication of OS.
Service Pack 2
If you buy a copy of Windows XP today it will surely include the Service Pack 2 as part of your purchase and you won’t need to install it separately. Also if you have an illegal copy of Windows you will not be able to install it unless you purchase a genuine copy.
Among the reasons to install Service Pack 2 are:
- Improves your privacy when surfing on the web
- Avoids unsafe downloads
- Reduces pop-up ads
- Includes firewall protection
- Additional security settings
- Makes it easier to connect to a wireless network
